St. Gregory Barbarigo Parish

St. Gregory Barbarigo Parish

Faced with a continued accumulation of debt and consistent monthly budget short falls, a pastoral change, and a desperate need for remodeling, the future of St. Gregory’s, a growing parish in a college town, looked uncertain.  Click here to learn about the parish’s remarkable recovery.

In the spring of 2003, St. Gregory’s parish and school) was shaken by the reassignment of its pastor amidst a period of financial challenges.  In addition to a debt that was growing by the year, the needs for up-to-date remodeling and an additional staff new youth minister pressed the parish council.  Sue Dorrel, business administrator, spearheaded an effort to secure the parish’s financial stability.  She contacted Church Development, and began guiding parishioners through the visioning process, which aimed open dialogue between the new pastor and his community members about the parish’s future plans.  After processing information gathered through town hall meetings and surveys, the community reached a consensus in the future vision of the parish, which prioritized paying off the debt, staffing a full time youth director, and major remodeling. As part of an overwhelming community response during the first step in the planning process, an individual volunteered to underwrite the cost of the next step: the feasibility study, which eventually developed into a full-fledged capital campaign.  Assisted by Church Development, the parish eventually paid off the debt, hired a new youth minister, and underwrote the cost of remodeling.
