Hope in Despairing Times: A Success Story in Three Parts (Part One)

13 Feb. 2017 Posted by Denis Greene in Success Stories

These are tumultuous times. As our political culture turns volatile, our economy looks like it might follow suite with its own uncertainty. It is at moments like these that churches grow anxious, and not without reason. When members are financially anxious, it can affect their giving and pledging. What to do?

At first glance, any church that bucks this trend would be a surprise. Fr. Mike Koller at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lenexa, Kansas, tells us that they are one such church. For 2017, they saw a fifteen percent increase in annual giving. And yet, the truth is that these results come directly from applying three basic tenets of our Stewardship System. Over the next few weeks, I will touch on each one in more detail.

The first important step is thanking people. At Holy Trinity, they thanked everyone who made a pledge. The amount of the pledge is irrelevant. The Stewardship Committee sent each one a thank you gift, and Fr. Mike sent each one a thank you note, letting them know that their pledge made a difference.

Why does this matter? For those who have already cultivated the habit of stewardship, these tokens are the icing on the cake. They give because they give, not because they want to receive anything. But for those who are still developing the practice of stewardship, this seemingly small gesture encourages that development as it grows.

Next week: step number two.

Are you looking for ways to grow annual giving in your church? Let us know. We love working with churches as you discover the generosity that God has in store for you!
