Success Stories: Gifting the Tithe

25 Sep. 2012 Posted by Denis Greene in Success Stories

Church Development shares a story of how tithe was used to bless a single mother.

Usually in success stories I share how Church Development has helped churches reach their giving goals. However, I have a far broader view of stewardship success outside of blogland, thus it makes sense to share some of that perspective here.

This is Colin McKay Miller. He’s a consultant at the Colorado office. One of the reasons we brought him in as a consultant is because we consistently hear, “How do I reach the young people in my church?” and Colin, not just by his age, is able to bring some insight to the area of connecting with younger generations.

Colin told me of one week he went to church when he was new to faith. His church collected the tithe as normal—with a prayer beforehand and baskets getting passed over the rows—but when the tithe came in, the pastor did something uncommon. He said, “I feel like God is telling me to give this tithe away to someone here today.”

Here’s what didn’t happen: There wasn’t some odd game show experience where several people stated why they needed the money most in the hopes of “winning” / splitting the tithe; the tithe baskets didn’t go around the room again in the hopes of guilting a greater harvest. Instead, the pastor knew whom God wanted to bless—a single mother reeling from abandonment by her husband—and gave her all that they collected that day.

The pastor went on to say that regardless of whether or not it’s seen, every week some of the tithe collected is used to tangibly care for those in need: widows and orphans, the poor and the sick, etc.

This type of sacrifice also required faith on the part of the pastor. He didn’t count what was received or think of what bill wouldn’t get paid. He just followed what God told him to do.

I can tell you that this lesson has stuck and influenced both this woman and our young consultant, Colin, in their heart towards stewardship. I'll also note that they’re now happily married.

I hope this testimony encourages your church in the journey you’re on. More success stories are available here
